Ethiopia has a Muslim community of approximately 33.9 percent of the population per the 2007 census (with figures from community organizations and recent surveys suggesting closer to 35 percent), making it home to one of the largest absolute Muslim populations in sub-Saharan Africa. The community is concentrated in the eastern (Harari, Somali, Afar) and southern (Oromia, Sidama, Silt'e) regions, with substantial urban populations in Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa, and Harar. Ethiopian Islam dates to the very dawn of the religion: in 615 CE the Prophet Muhammad sent a small group of early Muslims to seek refuge with the Aksumite Negus, an event commemorated as the First Hijra. The walled city of Harar, with 82 mosques and 102 shrines within its 16th-century walls, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and considered the fourth holiest city in Sunni Islam by some Ethiopian Muslim traditions. The Grand Anwar Mosque in Addis Ababa is the principal congregational mosque of the capital. The Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council (Majlis) is the recognized national body. eSalah uses the MWL default for Ethiopia.
